The myth of an idyllic Norwegian summer is turned upside down as we meet Eva and Per Ivar, a young couple set to take over the family cottage. It soon becomes evident that the first summer in their own cottage will be less peaceful than expected, as parents and in-laws keep showing up, disturbing the serenity. Eva’s controlling father keeps coming up with to-do lists of improvements, while friends with nasty habits keep coming to visit, invited or not.

Next Summer is a humorous drama, full of recognizable comedy. The story centers on the Norwegian tradition of spending summer at the family cottage by the sea, and plays on the sometimes awkward situations that arise when families gather with high expectations and low square footage.

The series addresses the tension under the light and informal surface, which often can’t be suppressed in the cramped quarters of cottages and holiday homes. The issues are relatable, such as the relationship with parents and in-laws, division of chores and maintenance work, often ridiculous house rules, and colliding views on how the summer should be enjoyed in the best way. The series is about our summer dreams about summer and summer holidays, and how it usually turns out differently than we planned it. But if it didn’t turn out perfectly this time, there is always next summer!
